Embracing the Stillness: A Tantric Guide to Honoring Winter’s Yin Energy
Lately I have been feeling uninspired; I was thinking that I may not even do a February newsletter. As I sat more with my feelings, I realized what I was feeling was the Yin energy of the winter season. We’re in it’s peak! With below freezing temperatures plaguing us for weeks (at least where I am in NYC). We are meant to slow down with nature’s energy. Conserving our energy, resting; giving ourselves that grace. This month’s Tantra education will be on how to practice slowing down with the winter.

As the world outside turns inward, entering a period of deep rest and crystalline quiet, our spiritual practice naturally calls for a shift. In the Tantric view, the universe is a dynamic dance of complementary energies: the active, solar, masculine Yang and the receptive, lunar, feminine Yin. Winter is the supreme expression of Yin. The earth rests. Light is scarce. Life force withdraws to the roots to gather strength for the coming spring. To force a fiery, effortful practice against this tide is to misunderstand Tantra’s fundamental principle of unity with all cycles. True practice is not separate from life. It is a conscious participation in its rhythms. This winter, we are invited to align our Tantra with the sacred quiet, transforming our practice into a vessel for profound inner listening and potent regeneration.
Reimagining Sadhana: From Outer Practice to Inner Sanctuary
Your daily sadhana (a daily spiritual practice; one of the main tools for working on the self and achieving a higher state of consciousness) need not diminish in the winter. It deepens and changes form. Consider this season an invitation to move from a practice of doing to a practice of being with. The outer forms may soften, but the inner connection can become more vivid than ever.
Begin by honoring the physical space. Create a simple altar that reflects the season. A dark cloth, a bare branch, a single crystal, a candle. These are your Yin allies. They speak of stillness, potential, and the beauty of essence. Before you sit, wrap yourself in a shawl. Let your body feel held and warm. This is not indulgence. It is the sacred act of creating a womb space for your consciousness.
Shift your asana (physical postures, poses, or seats used in yoga practice) practice from dynamic movement to gentle, floor-based shapes. Long-held Yin or restorative postures are profoundly Tantric in winter. They invite you to marry your awareness with the subtle energies of your tissues, your breath, and the silent spaces between thoughts. In poses like Supported Child’s Pose or Supta Baddha Konasana, you are not striving for a peak. You are practicing devotion to the vessel that carries your spirit. Each mindful breath becomes an offering of gratitude for its shelter.
The Alchemy of Breath and Silence
Pranayama (yogic practice of controlling the breath) in winter follows the same guiding principle. The stimulating, heating breaths of summer give way to softer, balancing, and nourishing techniques. Nadi Shodhana, Alternate Nostril Breathing, becomes a central practice. It harmonizes the solar and lunar channels within, mirroring the seasonal balance we seek. Its rhythm is gentle, like the falling snow, bringing equilibrium to a nervous system that may feel frayed by the year’s demands.
Most importantly, winter is the season to reclaim the power of silence. Tantra is a path of sound and vibration, but its deepest notes are heard in stillness. Dedicate a portion of your meditation to simply sitting in the dark, perhaps with only a candle’s flame. Listen. Listen to the silence in your room. Listen to the quieter rhythms of your own body. In this receptive listening, you are practicing a fundamental Tantric principle: you are making space for Shiva, the pure consciousness that resides in stillness. You are the receptive Yin to that boundless awareness.
Ritual as Receptive Communion
Tantra is infused with ritual, and winter rituals are inherently Yin. Let your practice be one of receiving blessings rather than actively invoking them.
Moon gazing is a perfect winter Tantric ritual. On a clear night, wrap warmly and sit with the moon. Soften your gaze. Feel her cool, reflective light as a balm. Imagine it bathing your entire being, cleansing and calming your emotional body. Do not analyze. Simply receive. This is a direct communion with the celestial embodiment of Yin.
Similarly, practice receptive mantra. Instead of chanting vigorously, whisper the mantra internally, or listen to a soft, melodic recording. Let the vibration wash over you and move through you. Be the hollow bone through which the divine sound flows. The bija mantra SHAM (for peace) or KLIM (for attracting loving energy) are particularly supportive for winter’s introspective mood.
The Inner Flame: Transforming Withdrawal into Wisdom
A common challenge in winter is the feeling of spiritual lethargy or melancholy. The Tantric view does not pathologize this. It sees this inward pull as an opportunity to tend the inner hearth. The fiery energy of Kundalini is not absent. It is burning at its core, consolidating and transforming.
When you feel withdrawn, practice contemplative journaling as a form of Svadhyaya (self-study). Light a candle. Write not from a place of critique, but from a place of witnessing. What seeds were planted in the past year? What is asking to be composted and released in this dark, fertile ground? This is not mere diary entry. It is a sacred dialogue with your deeper Self.
Finally, embrace the Tantric art of non-action. There is profound spiritual power in consciously choosing to rest, to read nourishing texts, to drink tea mindfully, or to simply watch the fire. In a culture that prizes relentless Yang activity, choosing Yin is a radical Tantric practice. It affirms that your worth is not in your output, but in your essence. You are practicing the being-ness of the Divine itself.
This winter, let your Tantra be a gentle, loving return to your own source. By honoring the Yin, you are not pausing your spiritual journey. You are allowing it to descend into the rich soil of your soul, where the most potent transformations occur unseen. When spring’s Yang energy finally stirs, you will rise not from a place of depletion, but from a deep, silent well of power that you have tenderly protected and nourished. You will rise integrated, whole, and radiantly alive.
Ivy’s Interest
As a person in the industry that I am, bitcoin/crypto currency has been a tool that I use on the regular. In August of 2025 I started learning more about privacy and safety when it comes to crypto currency. Through a dear friend of mine’s help, Violet, I have become more knowledgeable and confident in using it. I would encourage everyone to at least learn more about; what it is, how to use it, how to stay safe while doing so. Violet has done an amazing job outlining how to use crypto as a client and reasons why it’s a smart idea. You can find her teachings here. The more people use it, the more normalized it becomes. As of right now I only accept deposits and gifts in crypto, but hopefully with more normalization, I will be able to accept full tributes.
Ivy’s February Calendar
I will be available in NYC throughout February. I am available to host in Union Square, or I am happy to visit a high end hotel. If you would like to bring me to your city, you can inquire about a FMTY or TMTY.
I can’t wait to connect!
Peace & Love,
Ivy Rosalia
