I breathe – and I am light. I breathe – and I grow taller. I breathe – and I expand. I am here, now, in love, in life; in Infinite Possibility. Poem by Tui Fleming The Sacred Bridge: The Importance of Breath Work in Tantra and How to Practice Deep, Conscious Breathing In the quiet spaces between our thoughts, there is a constant, gentle rhythm. It is the rhythm of life itself. This rhythm is our breath. In the ancient spiritual science of Tantra, breath is far more than a biological function. It is the sacred bridge connecting the body, mind, and spirit. It is the vehicle for life force energy, known as Prana or Shakti. To master the breath is to begin mastering the flow of energy within, unlocking profound states of awareness, healing, and connection. This exploration delves into the heart of Tantric breath work. We will uncover its profound importance and guide you through a simple yet powerful practice of deep, conscious breathing. Tantra is a path of embodiment. It does not seek to transcend the physical world but to realize the divine within it. In this worldview, the breath is the most immediate and accessible expression of the universal life force. The Sanskrit word Prana translates to “vital life force” or “first unit of energy.” It is the intelligent energy that animates all of creation. We absorb Prana not only from the air we breathe but also from sunlight, food, and our environment. Conscious breathing, or Pranayama, is the practice of consciously regulating this energy to harmonize the body and mind. Tantra teaches that where our attention goes, our energy flows. Our mental and emotional states are directly reflected in our breathing patterns. Anxiety creates shallow, rapid breaths. Calm cultivates deep, slow rhythms. By consciously changing our breath, we can directly influence our state of being. We can dissolve energetic blockages, calm the nervous system, and awaken dormant potential. The breath becomes a tool to alchemize emotion, transform stress into vitality, and separate the stillness of our true self from the chatter of the mind. Tantra is the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. It is the sacred marriage of Shiva (pure awareness) and Shakti (creative energy) within our own being. The breath is the dance of this union. The inhale draws in Shakti, the vibrant, creative energy of the universe. The exhale releases into Shiva, the silent, spacious awareness that holds all. In each cycle, we practice this divine union, weaving the polarities of life into a harmonious whole. How to Practice Deep, Conscious Tantric Breathing The beauty of this practice is its simplicity. It requires no special equipment, only your attention. Find a quiet space where you can sit comfortably with your spine erect. This alignment allows for the free flow of energy through the central channel of the body. Step 1: Establishing Awareness Begin by closing your eyes. Gently bring your awareness to your natural breath. Do not try to change it. Simply observe the sensation of the air moving in and out of your nostrils. Feel the slight rise and fall of your chest and abdomen. Notice the temperature of the air on the inhale and the exhale. For a few minutes, be a silent witness to this natural process. This anchors you in the present moment. Step 2: Deepening the Breath (Diaphragmatic Breathing) Place one hand on your chest and the other on your navel. As you inhale slowly through your nose, imagine sending the breath deep into your belly. Feel your lower hand rise as your diaphragm expands. Your chest should remain relatively still. This is full, diaphragmatic breathing. It massages your internal organs and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, signaling safety and relaxation. As you exhale, gently let the air fall out of your body completely. Feel your hand lower. Allow the exhale to be longer than the inhale. This complete exhalation releases stagnant air and toxins, making space for fresh, oxygen-rich Prana on the next inhalation. Step 3: Cultivating Conscious Connection Now, introduce a gentle conscious element to this deepened breath. As you inhale, silently affirm “I receive.” Receive life, energy, and light. Feel yourself drawing in nourishment and vitality with every cell of your body. As you exhale, silently affirm “I release.” Release tension, stress, and anything that no longer serves you. Let go of thoughts, worries, and limitations. With each exhale, feel yourself becoming lighter and more open. Step 4: Visualizing the Flow of Energy To deepen the Tantric aspect, incorporate a simple visualization. Imagine a luminous, warm energy at the base of your spine. This is your reservoir of Shakti. On your next inhale, visualize this radiant energy rising gently up the front of your spine, nourishing every part of your being as it moves toward your heart. As you exhale, feel this energy descending down the back of your spine, grounding you and completing a circuit of light. Continue this circular flow of energy, synchronized with your breath. This practice, a simplified form of the microcosmic orbit, helps circulate Prana throughout your entire energy body. Practice this conscious breathing for five to ten minutes daily. Consistency is more important than duration. Over time, you will notice a profound shift. Your daily practice will become a sanctuary. You will carry a sense of calm and centered awareness into every aspect of your life. The breath is your constant companion on the path of awakening. It is the whisper of the divine within you. By honoring it, listening to it, and consciously working with it, you open the door to the deepest mysteries of Tantra. You discover that the key to universal energy has been with you all along, in the simple, sacred act of breathing. |

The Connection Between Energy, Pleasure, and Mindfulness
I want to walk the earth
Like there are gems waiting to be unearthed.
How lovely I imagine it would be
If every pair of wings
Looked like a miracle to me.
Hope would live in the breezes and the dirt,
And not just in the minds of children
And their dreams.
There would be new seeds to plant
Wherever my body happened to go.
Everything I threw into the world
Would be delighted
To have me watch it grow.
What a gift each day would be
As I lifted my face to the sky,
My mind open to the moment and
My heart open to whatâs next.
Where else would I be?
My joy would be
To live under the sky,
Breathing in the essence of this momentâ
A slice of eternityâ
Living in the reality
That I am blessed.
I want a life upheld
By the animating energy of love
That I was bold enough to believe in.
And yes,
I believe in the endless support of a loving energy.
I could allow myself to
Embrace the unknown
Like it was the glue that unites the whole world.
Through the generosity of my trust,
I could invite the mysteryâs guidance to flow,
Removing my need to walk the world
On my own.
A place of love is what I crave.
I need a place to stay
And belong to my self.
I need to feel the pool of wisdom
In which I swim
And listen to the earthâs song as though
I was basking in an eternal hymn.
To see my self in all beings,
In union with all things and
In harmony with the mysteriesâ
What could my life be but
A gift of eternity unto itself?
Yes, it is so:
In the heart of abundance, I dwell.
There is a wellspring of renewal and
Support like no other
In the deep reservoir of my soul.
This will be my life.
This is the story Iâm here to tell.
Poem by Jennifer Healey
In the realm of a tantric practice, three sacred forces intertwine to form the heart of transformation: energy, pleasure, and mindfulness. Each of these elements holds unique power, but it is in their convergence that Tantra reveals its true essence of embodied presence and spiritual awakening.
Tantra, in its traditional form, is not merely about sexuality, as often misunderstood in popular culture. Rather, it is a holistic spiritual tradition that embraces life fully. At its core, a tantric practice seeks to awaken the flow of life energy, honor the sacred nature of pleasure, and cultivate deep states of mindfulness. Together, these elements open gateways to profound inner freedom, intimacy, and connection.
Energy, often referred to as prana or shakti in Sanskrit, is the vital life force that animates all beings. In tantra, this energy is not abstract. It is something that can be felt, sensed, and directed. Practitioners (people who practice tantra) learn to become attuned to their own energetic body through breathwork, movement, sound, and intention.
Through techniques such as pranayama (breath control), asana (postures), and energy visualization, one learns to awaken dormant energy centers, most notably the chakras. The kundalini, often symbolized as a coiled serpent at the base of the spine, represents this latent power. When activated and guided with mindfulness, kundalini energy moves through the body, dissolving blockages and expanding awareness.
By learning to sense and flow with this subtle energy, tantric practitioners open themselves to a deeper current of vitality. This energy is not separate from the body. It is the body, animated and alive.
In tantric philosophy, pleasure is not something to be shamed, suppressed, or indulged in unconsciously. It is a sacred doorway into the present moment. When experienced mindfully, pleasure becomes a spiritual tool, one that brings awareness out of the mind and into the body.
Pleasure, whether arising from touch, sound, movement, or sensual connection, is a form of energy. Rather than chasing it or clinging to it, tantra teaches how to feel it deeply, hold it gently, and allow it to expand. This can shift the experience of pleasure from fleeting gratification to sustained presence.
Contrary to the view that spiritual paths require asceticism or denial, tantra honors the body as a temple. It invites practitioners to engage with pleasure consciously, with reverence. In doing so, pleasure becomes a mirror reflecting where energy flows freely and where it is blocked.
Whether through solo practices, sacred partnership, or daily acts of self-care, the key lies in turning attention inward. How does this moment feel? Where is the aliveness? By bringing awareness to sensation, one begins to taste the true nectar of tantra.
Mindfulness is the presence that binds energy and pleasure into a coherent, transformative force. Without mindfulness, energy can become chaotic and pleasure can become addictive. With mindfulness, both become instruments of awakening.
In tantric practice, mindfulness is not merely a mental exercise. It is embodied awareness grounded in sensation, breath, and being. Through sustained attention, one learns to witness each moment without judgment. This presence allows for deeper intimacy, not only with others but with the self.
Every tantric ritual, every breath, every movement is an invitation to return to now. Whether engaging in a sacred ceremony, a sensual massage, or a moment of silent meditation, mindfulness turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It transforms mechanical patterns into meaningful experience.
This mindful attention is what allows energy to rise safely and pleasure to unfold fully. It creates the container for deep trust and surrender, both within and in connection with another.
When energy is honored, pleasure is embraced, and mindfulness is cultivated, life itself becomes a sacred ritual.
Simple acts such as drinking tea, walking barefoot, or making love become infused with awareness and reverence. Relationships deepen as communication becomes more attuned and presence becomes more consistent. The body, once seen as a vessel of desire or limitation, is reclaimed as a portal to the divine.
Tantric living invites you to slow down. To listen. To feel. It does not demand perfection, only presence. The more one engages with energy, pleasure, and mindfulness as allies, the more alive and whole life becomes.
Tantra is not a quick fix or a path of escape. It is a return to the body, to breath, to the sacredness of sensation. It reminds us that energy is always moving, that pleasure is not separate from spirituality, and that mindfulness is the key to unlocking both.
By weaving energy, pleasure, and mindfulness together, we step into a life of depth, richness, and connection. This is the heart of tantric practice: not to transcend the human experience, but to fully embody it with grace, presence, and love.

How Tantra Approaches Sexuality as a Spiritual Practice
Sexuality is a force of immense power, one that transcends the physical and reaches into the spiritual realms of connection, energy, and self-realization. While many modern perspectives view sex primarily as a physical or emotional act, tantra offers a profound and transformative approach, seeing sexuality not only as an expression of love but as a sacred and spiritual practice. By integrating body, mind, and spirit, tantra invites us to explore the depths of our own sexual energy, transforming it into a powerful tool for spiritual growth, personal healing, and deep connection with others.
The beauty and wisdom of Tantra is that it enhances sexuality as a doorway to the “ecstatic mind of great bliss”.
Truly, at the peak of orgasm, we pierce through the illusion of fragmentation and separation, and glimpse the unity and interconnectedness of all beings.
And through the other – our partner – we fall in love with life.
– Margot Anand
The Tantric Philosophy of Sexuality
In the tradition of tantra, sexuality is seen as a fundamental life force, a powerful energy that is both creative and transformative. Tantric teachings suggest that sexual energy, when harnessed and revered, has the potential to awaken profound states of awareness, connecting us to our higher selves and the universe at large. This approach is rooted in the belief that the body is sacred, and through conscious engagement with the bodyâs energy, we can experience a state of unity. Unity where the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being come together.
At the core of tantra is the principle of Shiva and Shakti, the cosmic union of the divine masculine and feminine energies. These energies are not just seen as concepts but as living forces that permeate all aspects of existence, including our sexuality. In tantra, sexuality is not merely an act of physical pleasure, but a gateway to experiencing the divine within. By engaging in sexual practices with awareness and intention, practitioners seek to awaken the dormant energies within themselves, leading to greater spiritual awakening and enlightenment.
In tantra, sexual energy is regarded as one of the most potent forces in the body. Rather than being suppressed or repressed, it is embraced and celebrated as a natural and sacred part of being human. However, tantric practices do not encourage mindless or casual expression of this energy. Instead, they emphasize the importance of intention, mindfulness, and presence in every sexual encounter. When practiced consciously, sex becomes a form of puja, or a sacred offering to the divine, where both partners are invited to enter a space of deep reverence and mutual respect.
The goal is not just physical pleasure, but the cultivation of energy that can be used to elevate the spirit. In tantric sexuality, there is an understanding that the energy generated during intimate moments can be expanded and redirected, circulating throughout the body to promote healing, vitality, and enlightenment. By consciously channeling this energy, tantric practitioners can experience heightened states of awareness and connection; both within themselves and with their partner.
One of the most important principles in tantric sexuality is presence. In a world where distractions and hurried routines often take precedence, tantra teaches the value of slowing down, being fully present, and engaging in intimate acts with complete awareness. Every touch, every kiss, every breath is an opportunity to connect more deeply with the self and the partner. This practice of deep presence fosters intimacy, trust, and an authentic exchange of energy, which can be both profoundly healing and transformative.
By cultivating presence in sexual practices, tantra allows individuals to move beyond the distractions of the mind, reaching a state of deep relaxation and heightened sensitivity. This, in turn, allows both partners to experience the full spectrum of sensations, from the physical to the energetic, that emerge in moments of intimate connection. When sex is approached in this way, it becomes less about achieving an end goal, such as orgasm, and more about the experience of union and flow between two people.
In this state of awareness, there is an opportunity for mutual exploration, a dance of energies between the divine masculine and feminine. This sacred union is not about dominance or submission, but about balance and equality. In tantra, both partners are seen as divine beings, each contributing their own unique energy to the union. When this energy is shared and honored in a mindful way, it creates a deep sense of unity and connection that transcends the physical realm.
Tantric Practices for Cultivating Sexual Energy
While tantric sexuality is deeply spiritual, it is also practical. There are many tools and practices that can help individuals and couples cultivate and harness sexual energy in a conscious and intentional way. Some of the most common tantric practices include:
- Breathing Techniques: One of the most fundamental practices in tantra is conscious breathing. Breathing deeply and slowly helps to bring awareness to the body and to the energy circulating within it. In tantric sex, breathing is synchronized between partners, which helps to deepen the connection and harmonize the flow of energy.
- Slow, Intentional Touch: In tantra, touch is not merely about physical sensation; it is an act of reverence and connection. Practitioners are encouraged to touch slowly and deliberately, allowing the energy between partners to build and flow. This approach shifts the focus away from performance and toward an experience of shared energy.
- Eye Gazing: Eye contact is a powerful practice in tantra, as it allows individuals to connect on a soul level. By gazing into your partnerâs eyes, you open up the possibility of seeing them as more than just a physical being, but as a reflection of the divine. This practice deepens the intimacy and emotional bond between partners, allowing for a more profound and holistic connection.
- Sacred Space: Creating a sacred environment is another important aspect of tantric practice. A calm, clean, and welcoming space helps to set the intention for the practice. This can include lighting candles, burning incense, and using soft music to create a peaceful, meditative atmosphere.
- Energy Circulation: In tantric connection, sexual energy is not merely released, but it is circulated through the body, allowing it to flow freely and be used for spiritual awakening. This can be done through techniques like Mulabandha (the root lock) and Uddiyana Bandha (the abdominal lock), which help to move energy upward through the bodyâs chakras.
One of the most significant benefits of tantric sexuality is its potential to heal shame and guilt around sex. In many cultures, sex has been heavily stigmatized and repressed, creating negative associations with our bodies and sexual desires. Tantra seeks to dismantle these cultural taboos by viewing sexuality as sacred, beautiful, and transformative.
By reclaiming the sacredness of sexuality, tantra encourages us to embrace our desires without judgment, guilt, or shame. It invites us to explore the depth of our sexual energy, not as a means to fulfill selfish desires, but as a path to spiritual growth, healing, and liberation. This shift in perspective allows individuals to approach intimacy with openness, vulnerability, and a deep sense of reverence for themselves and their partners.
Tantraâs approach to sexuality as a spiritual practice offers a profound path of transformation. By engaging in sexual practices with mindfulness, presence, and intention, individuals can tap into the powerful energies that reside within them, using these energies not only to enhance their physical experiences but to connect more deeply with themselves, their partners, and the divine. In this sacred practice, sexuality becomes much more than an act of physical pleasure; it becomes a doorway to higher consciousness, a tool for healing, and a way to experience unity with the universe itself. Through tantra, we are reminded that our bodies are sacred, our sexual energy is divine, and our connection to one another is a reflection of the greater cosmic dance of life.

The Key Principles and Philosophies of Tantra: Understanding the Sacred Path
The Nature of the Secret Knowledge
Imagine a road that if revealed you cannot travel it.
Imagine a love that if known you cannot touch.
This is the nature of the secret knowledge, if you know what we seek, then it becomes the obstacle that cannot be surpassed; a new mirage of words, and entrapments that keeps you locked out. Unable to realize it.
Waking up is beyond language, but through words (dreams, thought, impressions, dharma and karma) we must go forth!
Keep in mind as it reveals to you, that each layer that peels falls because the previous one fell off. But again be careful because by opening it up you might get tangled in thinking there is a core, a truth, a veracious teaching, but in the end as with an onion there was nothing to be sought, nothing to be taught, nothing to pursue, nothing to be won.
Only endless layers of packed karma.
Poem by Gagayogini
Hello my dear love,
This month we are exploring the fundamental principles and philosophies of tantra. By understanding these core teachings, one can begin to integrate tantra into their spiritual journey, cultivating a more balanced, aware, and fulfilling life.
Tantra is an ancient spiritual tradition that has captivated seekers for centuries with its rich teachings and transformative practices. Originating in India, tantra encompasses a wide range of practices designed to expand consciousness, deepen self-awareness, and connect individuals to the divine. At its core, tantra is not merely a set of rituals or techniques but a profound philosophy that integrates the body, mind, and spirit.
Tantra is About Union
The central philosophy of tantra revolves around the concept of union. Tantra seeks to unite the individual self with the universal consciousness, blending the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of existence. It teaches that everything in the universe is interconnected, and through conscious practices, we can experience this oneness with all of life.
In tantric teachings, this union is often symbolized through the sacred dance of Shiva and Shakti, the divine masculine and feminine energies. These energies are not seen as opposites but as complementary forces that, when balanced, create harmony and wholeness. Tantra teaches that each individual embodies both these energies, and the process of self-realization involves harmonizing these forces within.
Through tantric practices, whether it be meditation, breath work, or conscious sexuality, practitioners seek to merge with the divine and experience the fullness of life in its sacred entirety.
Tantra Embraces the Body as Sacred
Unlike many traditional spiritual paths that often emphasize transcendence of the physical body, tantra teaches that the body is sacred. It is viewed as a temple and a vessel for divine energy. The physical body is not something to be rejected or ignored but rather honored and revered as an essential part of the spiritual journey.
This philosophy extends to the senses as well. Tantra encourages practitioners to awaken their senses and embrace the fullness of experience, whether through touch, sound, sight, or taste. The sensual world is not seen as separate from the spiritual world but as a doorway to deeper consciousness. By engaging with the senses mindfully, tantra guides practitioners to live fully in the present moment, fostering an awareness that connects body, mind, and spirit.
The Power of Breath and Energy
One of the key practices in tantra is the use of breath to cultivate and circulate life force energy, often referred to as prana or kundalini. Breath is seen as the bridge between the body and the spirit, and by mastering conscious breathing, individuals can awaken latent energies within themselves.
In tantric meditation, practitioners use specific breathing techniques to guide prana through the body. This circulation of energy helps to balance the chakras, harmonize the mind, and promote emotional and physical well-being. Tantra teaches that by consciously directing breath and energy, we can reach heightened states of awareness and deepen our connection to the divine.
Breath work in tantra is often integrated with movement, sound, and visualization, creating a holistic experience that stimulates both the body and the mind. By focusing on the breath, tantra enables practitioners to enter deeper states of meditation and reach a heightened sense of self-awareness and presence.
The Importance of Presence and Awareness
A core aspect of tantra is the cultivation of presence and mindfulness. In the modern world, distractions are ever-present, and it is easy to become disconnected from the present moment. Tantra offers a path to overcome this fragmentation by emphasizing the importance of being fully aware and present in each moment.
Through meditation, breathing techniques, and mindful living, tantra encourages practitioners to cultivate a deep awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and actions. By observing the mind without attachment, individuals can transcend the ego and tap into their higher self. This mindfulness also extends to relationships and sexuality, where presence and conscious connection can transform the experience into something sacred and transformative.
Tantra and Sacred Sexuality
One of the most well-known aspects of tantra is its approach to sexuality. In many spiritual traditions, sexuality is often seen as something separate from spiritual practice, but tantra integrates sexuality into the path of self-realization. Tantra views sexual energy as a powerful and sacred force that can be used for spiritual awakening.
Rather than focusing solely on physical pleasure, tantric sexuality is about cultivating deep connection, intimacy, and sacred union with oneself and a partner. Practices such as conscious breathing, eye gazing, and slow touch help build a strong energy connection that allows sexual energy to flow freely through the body. Tantra teaches that sexual energy, when harnessed properly, can be a gateway to higher consciousness, profound healing, and spiritual transformation.
This approach to sexuality emphasizes the importance of balance, presence, and intention. It is not about seeking gratification but about experiencing the fullness of life force energy in a conscious, intentional way. By embracing sexual energy as sacred, tantra transforms intimate encounters into acts of spiritual devotion and personal growth.
Tantra’s View of the Mind and Ego
Tantra also acknowledges the role of the mind and ego in our spiritual journey. The mind, often dominated by thoughts, desires, and distractions, can be a source of suffering and disconnection. Tantra offers practices that help practitioners observe the mind without attachment, allowing them to transcend the ego and its limiting beliefs.
One of the central teachings of tantra is that the ego is not something to be eliminated but to be understood. Through meditation, chanting, and self-reflection, individuals can gain insight into the nature of their thoughts and emotions, recognizing that they are not defined by the ego but by their higher self. Tantra teaches that through awareness, we can transform the mind, releasing limiting beliefs and embracing our true nature as divine beings.
The Path of Tantra as a Way of Life
Ultimately, tantra is more than just a series of techniques or rituals. It is a way of life, a path of deepening self-awareness, embracing the sacredness of all things, and realizing the interconnectedness of all beings. Tantra invites practitioners to live consciously, to honor the body and mind, and to merge with the divine in every moment.
Through its principles of union, presence, sacredness, and mindfulness, tantra provides a transformative path to spiritual awakening. It teaches that the journey to enlightenment is not about transcending lifeâs experiences but about embracing them fully and with awareness.
The core principles and philosophies of tantra offer a unique and profound approach to spirituality. By integrating the body, mind, and spirit, tantra provides a holistic path to self-realization and spiritual growth. Through practices such as conscious breathing, mindfulness, and sacred sexuality, tantra invites us to experience the divine in every moment and to live fully, authentically, and in harmony with the universe.
If you are interested in learning more about tantra, begin by exploring simple practices such as mindful breathing and meditation, or seek out a practitioner, such as myself, to train with. Remember, Tantra is a practice; over time, these practices will help you cultivate deeper self-awareness and connect to the sacred energy within.

Sometimes the most powerful forces donât roar, they whisper.
This last month, as I traveled through Japan for the first time, I found myself thinking about where some of our modern spiritual practices come from. Youâve probably heard of Reiki, energy healing thatâs made its way into clinics, yoga studios, and maybe even your own home. If you have seen me in person, youâve experienced it in session. Not everyone knows that Reiki has roots tangled deep in Japanâs native spiritual tradition: Shintoism.
Iâve been diving into the history of Shintoism, the ancient spiritual tradition of Japan, and its fascinating connection to Reiki. Exploring these roots feels extra meaningful, since I experienced it first-hand.

Shinto isnât some exotic philosophy. You have probably touched its edges before:
Purity and HarmonyâRitual cleanliness and balance with nature. That moment when you splash water on your face before a big meeting? Shinto priests call this misogi, ritual washing to clear energy.
Shrinesâ Torii gates mark sacred spaces.
Ever noticed how crossing through a stadium tunnel changes your focus? Thatâs what torii gates (those iconic red arches) doâthey mark where ordinary life stops and something bigger begins. And matsuri (festivals) celebrate the kami (deities, divinities, spirits, mythological, spiritual, or natural phenomena).
The electric feeling at a tailgate or concert? Shintoâs matsuri festivals tap that same primal group energyâjust swap beer for sake and the band for a drum procession. No Separation of Sacred & SecularâââThe mechanic wiping grease from his hands bows to his tools, The chef treats his knife like a living thing, The salaryman pauses under a cherry treeânot to pray, just to notice.
A Brief History of Shinto: The Way of the Kami
Shinto, meaning âthe way of the godsâ (ç„é, shintĆ), is Japanâs indigenous belief system, dating back thousands of years. Unlike many religions, Shinto has no single founder or sacred textâââitâs built around rituals, nature reverence, and a deep sense of connection between people and the unseen world.
Shinto holds that spirits, kami,âreside in natural objects like rivers, trees, stones, wind, and even everyday objects. But unlike gods in Western traditions, these kami arenât all-powerful, theyâre closer to energetic presences, living in harmony with the land and its people.
Itâs not about worship. Itâs about participation. In a world that pushes us to go faster, Shinto invites us to slow down and notice the sacred in the everyday.
You wonât find dogma in Shinto. Instead, itâs expressed through actions: purifying oneself before entering a shrine, offerings of sake and rice, seasonal festivals, and moments of stillness beneath ancient trees. There are shrines scattered throughout the country of Japan. Finding one on most corners, as you would expect to find your favorite coffee or food franchise. Japan itself does an amazing job of building the new around the old, not destroying their history, but embracing and honoring it.

The Shinto-Reiki Connection
Shinto bows to the mountain. Reiki helps the mountain in you remember its strength.
Reiki was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual seeker who trained in multiple disciplines, including Shinto, Buddhism, and martial arts. While Reiki as a system is unique to Usui, it echoes Shinto in fundamental ways: the belief in an unseen life force (ki), the importance of purification, and the emphasis on energetic balance between people and nature.
When a Reiki practitioner places their hands on or near your body, theyâre not just âhealingâ you, theyâre aligning you with something older, subtler, and deeply natural.
Itâs not a performance. Itâs a rebalancing. A remembering.
In essence, Reiki can be seen as a modern healing art rooted in Shintoâs reverence for energy and spiritual harmony.
I used to think spirituality was about adding more; more chants, more rules. Then I stood in a Tokyo shrine where the only instruction was to âNotice.â

This month, let’s practice mindfulness through the Shinto move:
Pause at any threshold (doorway, car door)
Exhale like youâre leaving baggage outside
Step forward lighter
No apps. No cost. Just 2,000 years of proof that sometimes, the deepest power comes from not forcing it.
I am struck by how something timeless in these practices still resonates. Something about stepping back from the noise and letting yourself just be. Whether through Reiki, meditation, or simply pausing to appreciate the kami in a sunset, weâre all seeking connectionâto ourselves, each other, and the unseen energy around us.
Whether or not youâre into spiritual practices, thereâs a quiet truth here: life isnât just happening to youâââitâs flowing through you.
Maybe you donât need to do anything this month. Maybe the best thing you can do is find a patch of sun, breathe, and rememberâyouâre not just living, you are life itself.

Clarity, Independence & A Hard Reset: Your April Power Move
âUnlimitedâ
by Pheobe Garnsworthy
She wakes up scared.
Not of what she can’t do, but of what she can.
She has the power to create whatever she wants.
The ability to be whoever she wishes to be.
But all that power somehow suffocates her.
And she falls down worried with guilt as to what other people might think if she ever showed them her power.
Scared that if she steps out of the crowd that she’s going to stand out too much.
But she has no choice.
She has to follow her dreams.
If she doesn’t they will haunt her all day.
Remind her of the kind of girl she is meant to be.
The kind of girl she deep down wants to be.
And one day she listens.
She is no longer lost.
She is finally free.

April is here, and with it comes a turning point. The energy is sharper, clearerâlike the first cold splash of water on your face. The fire of Marchâshedding the old, making bold movesânow shifts into something deeper.
No more waiting for permission or chasing fresh starts. This month thrives on cutting ties with limitations and stepping firmly into your empowered evolution.
Two cosmic heavyweights are rolling through: a Full Moon that forces
endings and a New Moon that sets the stage for raw, unfiltered progress.
One is a wake-up call; the other is a launchpad.
âšApril 13: Full MoonâââThe Hard Truth & The Breakaway
Some endings come slowly. Others hit like a hammer.
This full moon is the second kindâone that exposes codependent or unhealthy relationship dynamics finally coming to a close.
You might see that youâre letting go of a relationship, not just with people (romantic, business), habits, or even outdated self-perceptions.
Also, dependency in an area of your life where itâs gotten stuck, draining, or just plain painful.
Blame doesnât matter here; true shift happens when you prioritize yourself. If somethingâs been sucking your time, energy, or peace without giving anything back, the universe is handing you the scissorsâââtie cosmic events to tangible action.
đ„ Full Moon Challenge: The âDoes This Serve Me?â Test
Identify the drainâââWhat (or who) leaves you feeling exhausted, resentful, or stuck?
Cold hard truthâââAre you keeping it out of obligation, fear, or just habit?
One decisive moveâââDistance, a hard conversation, or a full exit. No half-measures.
This is not weaknessâitâs strategic surrender.
Letting go isnât losing. Itâs making room for what actually fits the person youâre becoming.
âšApril 27: New MoonâââBuilding Unshakable Foundations
New Moons are for fresh starts, and this one keeps you grounded.
No more chasing shiny distractions. Itâs time to lock in on what matters: health, money, discipline, or a long-delayed goal.
đš New Moon Action Plan: Forget motivation. Build systems.
Pick one priorityâââNot five. One. (Example: Strength, savings, or a skill youâve neglected.)
Ruthless routineâââWhatâs the simplest daily action that gets you closer? Do that. No exceptions.
Delete the noiseâââIf itâs not moving you forward, itâs slowing you down. Unfollow, unsubscribe, or say âNOâ without guilt.
Keep the Momentum: No More Backtracking
The Full Moon forces a necessary endingâââone that might ache a little, like pulling a splinter youâve ignored too long. But that sting? Itâs proof youâre backing your higher self. Proof youâre choosing yourself. The New Moon then hands you a blank page. No past, no guilt, just the weight of your own potential in your hands.
The middle? Thatâs where you prove it. Where you stand firm in the person youâre evolving into, even when the old version whispers doubts.
Stop over-negotiating. You already know what you need to do. The next level of you is stronger, freer, more aliveâââwaiting on the other side of that decision. Stop bargaining. Start building.
Physical = Mental. Your body isnât just a machine; itâs the foundation of your resolve. Lift heavy. Sprint until your lungs burn. Move like your sanity depends on itâââbecause it does. A strong body doesnât just carry weight; it teaches your mind how to do the same.
Protect your energy like itâs the last currency that matters. Because it is. Not everyone deserves a seat at your table. Not every voice deserves your attention. Some bridges need to burn so you can finally see the horizon.
April doesnât reward hesitation. It rewards those who act. Who plant their flags in new ground and refuse to look back.
The door is open. The air on the other side smells like freedom, like possibility. Youâve carried the weight long enough. That weight youâve carried has taught you strength. Now, lay it down. The person on the other side of that door doesnât need it anymore.
Walk through itâânot because itâs easy but because you owe it to yourself.
đȘđ„ Keep going.

Power, Growth & New Beginnings â Birthday Month! đ
Come Here to Me from Crete
Come here to me from Crete, to your temple,
Where stands your lovely grove of apple trees,
Where holy altars smoke with frankincense;
Here cold water sounds through apple branches,
The ground is all carpeted with roses,
Enchanted sleep falls from shimmering leaves;
Here the field that’s grazed by horses is lush
With spring flowers, here the winds sweetly blow
[…]
Here, O goddess, so gracefully you grasp
The golden cup, freely pouring like wine
The nectar all-mixed with our rejoicing.
Poem by Sappho (translated by Peter Saint-Andre)
March brings a significant transition. Winter loosens its grip, daylight stretches longer, and the energy shifts.
It’s more than just the change of seasons; youâre standing at the start of something new.
This month focuses on letting go and leveling up. The key is to understand the balance between release and evolution.
March 14: Full Moon & Lunar EclipseâââThe Beginning of the End
Lunar eclipses close chapters. They force decisions weâve been avoiding. And this one? Itâs the first eclipse of 2025, an 18-month cycle of releasing control.
Think of it as cleaning up your phoneâs storage. You wouldnât keep useless apps eating up space, right? Your mind, your time, your energyâthe same rule applies.
If youâve been micromanaging somethingâobsessing over the details, trying to force an outcome, holding on to something thatâs just not workingâthis is your cue to let it go.
âEclipse Challenge: Clean up space for what is essential.â
Identify whatâs been weighing you down. A project? A relationship? A mindset?
Ask yourself: Am I fixing this, or am I wasting time?
Make a decision. Start the process of letting go.
March 20: Spring EquinoxâââTranscend & Rebuild
The Spring Equinox represents balance. Day and night are equal, reminding us that growth comes from both stillness and intentional action.
Setting goals is just the initiation; real progress comes when you align with something bigger. Whether itâs spirituality, creativity, or just a sense of purpose, the equinox is your chance to tap into something deeper.
đč Get Clear on Your VisionâWhat do you truly want? A stronger mindset? More discipline? A career move? A relationship that adds to your life? Be specific. Take 10 minutes to write down what success looks like for youâââthis year, this season, this month.
đč Drop the ExcusesâWaiting for the perfect moment? Itâs not coming. There will always be reasons to put things off, but progress starts when you move despite the obstacles. Begin where you are, with the resources you have. The first move is often the hardest, but itâs the one that changes everything.
đč Create a ritualâInstead of finding motivation, find one practice that keeps you anchoredâjournaling, meditation, lifting weights, morning walks. Even five minutes a day builds momentum. Rituals keep you connected to your vision when distractions try to pull you off course.
đč Cut the Clutter âTake an honest look at where your energy goes. Is it endless scrolling? Saying âyesâ to tasks you donât want to do? Overanalyzing decisions instead of taking action? Pick one habit that drains you and drop it. Reclaim that time for something that moves you forward.
đčStep Outside Before Grabbing Your PhoneâââJust five minutes of morning sunlight sets your rhythm for the day. Forget the all-or-nothing mindset. You donât need a perfect workout planâââjust move. Lift weights, go for a quick run, stretch, or take a walk. Mental clarity comes when your body is strong.
Take the Lead
March is a season of progressâa time to clear the clutter, plant new intentions, and step into the future with purpose.
Whether youâre releasing what no longer serves you or building something greater, the universe has already opened the door.
Now, walk through it.

Build a Foundation of Self-Love đ
âI will not apologize for choosing myself this time.
Self-love is the chapter Iâve always wanted to write.â
– Author unknown
This month marks the 1-year anniversary of starting this newsletter! đ Thank you to everyone who has been enjoying them since the beginning, and to those who have joined along the way! đ„° I am still figuring out what kind of content I like to include each month, so you will probably continue to see different kinds of topics each month. Something new I am trying this month is a guided meditation, voiced by yours truly! I put a lot of energy into the recording, and I am very proud of it đ„° If they are received well, I may end up doing multiple recordings a month.
February isnât just about heartsđ, chocolatesđ«, and fancy dinnersđ„©đ·. While society makes this month about love for others, how often do we refill our own cup of self-love?
Last month, we spoke about self-compassionâcutting yourself slack when life doesnât go as planned. Now, letâs take that a step further. Before you roll your eyes and think, âThat sounds fluffy,â hear me out. Self-love isnât bubble baths and mirror affirmations; though, those are also great! Itâs about building respect for yourselfâyour strengths, your boundaries, and even your flaws.
The Importance of Self-Love: Why Itâs Not Just a Buzzword
It isnât just a feel-good conceptâself-love is your foundation. If you want to raise your potential at work, have healthier relationships, or just feel more grounded, it starts here.
When you prioritize self-love:
You build resilience. Lifeâs punches feel less heavy because youâve got your own back.
You set better boundaries. You learn to stop agreeing to things that leave you feeling drained. Prioritize your time and energy for the things and people that truly matter to you.
Youâre healthierâmentally and physically. Study shows that it reduces stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of depression. It provides a psychological buffer that helps us navigate lifeâs ups and downs more effectively.
Self-love doesnât just happen. Itâs a skill one you can develop with intention.
Cultivating Self-Love: Simple, Actionable Steps
1. Know Yourself
Take some time to figure out what drives you. What makes you happy? What makes you feel drained? The better you know yourself, the easier it is to make choices that align with your values.
Spend 10 minutes journaling this week about who you are; your personality traits, what you like about yourself, what you would like to see different within yourself, what activities you enjoy, the type of people you like to be around, etc. Keep it raw and real. No filters.
2. Ditch the Negative Self-Talk
Are you familiar with the inner voice that tells you that you arenât enough? That voice is lying. Start calling it out when it happens. Replace negative self-talk with something true.
Instead of telling yourself, âIâm terrible at this.â Say, âIâm making progress, and thatâs what matters.â
Itâs not faking positivity; itâs being fair and compassionate to yourself.
3. Say No Without Guilt
This might be the toughest for some of us, but self-love often means protecting your time and energy. Overcommitting is a fast track to burnout.
The next time you get invited to something you really donât want to do, politely decline. No excuses are needed. âThank you for the invitation, but I am not able to attend.â
4. Do Something Just for You (No Apologies)
We are often taught that taking time for yourself is selfish. It doesnât make sense in the life we are living. Whether itâs hitting the gym, starting a hobby, or just watching a show you love, make space for your own happiness. Schedule one thing this week thatâs purely for you.
This is brain chemistry. The more you treat yourself like someone worth caring about, the better your life becomes.
One Small Habit to Start
This month, focus on one small act of self-love every day. Here are a few ideas:
Write down one thing you like about yourself every morning.
Take 5 minutes before bed to reflect on what went well that day.
Commit to a workoutânot for the calories, but for the endorphins.
Small wins add up for a long way. By the end of the month, you might just see yourself in a whole new light.
Youâre Worth It
This self-love can feel awkward or even selfish at first. But hereâs the truth: loving yourself isnât about ego; itâs about giving yourself the tools to show up betterâfor your work, your relationships, and your goals.
This February, make yourself more of a priority. The world can wait while you build something unshakableâa rock-solid foundation of self-respect. Whether itâs through reframing your thoughts, setting boundaries, or simply taking a moment to appreciate who you are.
Make this month about showing up for the most important person in your life: “YOU!â

Embracing January: Slow Down, Recharge, and Start Strong âïž
Happy New Year! đ„ł
Weâve crossed into 2025, and if youâre like most folks, youâve got that âNew Year, New Meâ energy buzzing. The gyms are packed, planners are filling up, resolutions, big goals, and a sense of âgo, go, go.” ⊠How about we take a step back for a momentâthis isnât the time to go pedal-to-the-metal. Winter has a different rhythm; itâs slower and quieter. Pushing full steam ahead isnât the goal. The focus is on finding balance, conserving energy, and being kind to yourself as you transition into 2025.
Natureâs in hibernation modeâtrees, animals, and even the sun taking its time to rise and set. Winter embodies the Yin energy of the yin-yang dynamicâsoft, reflective, and inward-focused. While society pushes us to be all Yangâaction, achievement, hustleâitâs an occasion to admire the season and lean into the power of patience and self-compassion.
âïžRethink Resolutions
January resolutions often come with big expectations and even bigger pressure. Letâs flip that belief system. Instead of aiming for massive change right away, think smaller. Small, deliberate actions. Actions that feel natural and sustainable, not forced or overwhelming.
Set Intentions, Not Deadlines: Resolutions can feel rigid like youâre racing against a clock. Swap them out for intentions that give you the flexibility to grow at your own pace. Forget the âall or nothingâ mindset. Instead of saying, âIâm going to lose 20 pounds this month,â focus on simple habits like drinking more water or stretching daily.
Prioritize Recovery: Just like muscles grow stronger during rest, so do your mind and body. Catch up on sleep, take walks in nature instead of high-intensity workouts, and allow yourself to recharge.
Whatâs one simple habit you could build this winter? Maybe itâs journaling for 5 minutes in the morning. Or getting outside for a short walk every afternoon. Start small, and slowly add on to your new habits as the week pass.
âïž Embrace the Art of Slowing Down
It might feel counterintuitive, but slowing down isnât the same as being unproductive. Slowing down gives you clarity. It helps you figure out what really matters before diving in.
Conserve Your Energy: Winter is for recharging. Avoid draining yourself by overcommitting or chasing external expectations.
Stay Present: Donât rush through these quieter moments. Savor them. Whether itâs sipping coffee in the morning, reading a good book, or just taking a deep breathâthese small moments of mindfulness can anchor you.
âïž Self-Compassion Over Perfection
We are all our own worst critics. Itâs easy to get frustrated if youâre not where you want to be yet. Remember: progress isnât linear, and January doesnât have to be perfect. Itâs a practice.
Try this January mantra: âI am doing enough, and I am enough.â
Give Yourself Grace: Missed a workout? Ate the pizza instead of the salad? It is not a failure. Itâs human. Instead of feeling guilty, allow yourself to enjoy yourself in that moment. Give gratitude for that rest. Give gratitude for that yummy food.
Celebrate the Small Wins: Maybe you didnât hit all your targets today, but what did you accomplish? Thatâs enough. You are enough.
Talk to Yourself Like You Would a Friend: Would you call your best friend a failure for skipping a task? Didnât think so. It’s self-expression and joy. You donât have to be the loudest in the room to feel accomplished or defeatedâsometimes, itâs the quiet moments that mean the most.
Show yourself the same kindness.
This season has its own kind of strength. Winter teaches us patience. It reminds us that growth happens in cycles. Let this month be tuning in, not tuning out. Be present. Slow down. Recharge. When the time comes, youâll be ready to take on the rest of 2025 with strength and clarity.
When spring comes, youâll be glad you gave yourself this space to rest and realign. For now, honor the season and honor where youâre at. Slower days, quieter moments, and a little extra self-compassion can go a long way.
Whatâs one way youâll give yourself a break this month? Think about it. Then, actually do it. You deserve that.
